Australia's national gemstone, beautiful, colourful Opal

Australian precious opal is highly prized worldwide for it's brilliant colours and superior quality. Their beauty lies in the vivid flash of colours, known as "play of colour". Ranging from blues, greens to reds and yellows, the iridescence of colour is also categorized by the patterning - the most valuable being the harlequin or checkerboard pattern. Opal, also known to Indigenous people as the fire of the desert, is a powerful symbol of Australia's arid interior. The most recent famous opal, named "The Royal One", a 306 carat black opal with blue-green play of colour has been estimated to have a value of US$3 million dollars.
